Image FAQs

How will I receive my final headshots?

Final, high-resolution images will be sent to you via wetransfer within two weeks of selection.

You will receive both a 4x5 headshot and a 2x3 portrait crop for each selection.

Do you shoot headshots in black & white?

Black & white photography is beautiful, but casting professionals need to see full colour images of you. For headshots, I shoot on professional Sony cameras with full-frame colour sensors.

If you would like a few of your favourite selections from our shoot processed in black & white, please let me know and we’ll work something out.

Do you shoot on film?

I love analogue cameras and shooting on film, but let’s just say up front digital files are amazing for headshots.

At your shoot we’ll take more photographs digitally than we ever could on film. My aim is for you to choose from a wide variety of expressions and images. With digital photography, you will have plenty of options in your online gallery to review -usually within 48 hrs.

If you would like to take some film portraits please contact me directly. We can discuss my film cameras and what approach you are interested in for your project.

I can’t decide on my favourites, can I have all my images unedited?

No, I’m afraid not. However, I’ll highlight a selection of your best images in your gallery to help you choose. Your agent can also have access to your gallery.

Can I just edit my own RAW files or JPGs?

No. I only release images I have retouched / graded personally.

How do you retouch?

Your headshots need to both look and feel like you. When you are next in front of a casting director, you should be instantly recognisable by your headshot.

I do retouch carefully to remove distracting or temporary elements like blemishes, stray hairs, a fallen eyelash or a fleck of make-up. I can also reduce under-eye shadows a bit if necessary. I do not, however, airbrush casting headshots as if they are a beauty campaign. I aim to keep laugh lines, birth marks and scars. I want to your photographs to remain as natural and intriguing as possible.

RAW files are also adjusted for image exposure, warmth and tone, like working in the digital equivalent of a photographic darkroom.

Can I have the full copyright for any images?

No. Headshots are for you to promote yourself as an actor or performer. you have my permission for this, but I am the full owner of any images.

More specifically, your images are licensed for standard headshot usage on your personal profiles on Spotlight, Showcast, IMDB, Agent website, social media accounts and personal websites. You may also use your photograph for academic or grant applications and in-house production materials (theatre programmes & websites).

Photographs must be clearly credited to 'KAR FLEMING' wherever they are used. For social media please credit me as KAR FLEMING @KAR.FLEMINGPHOTO in both the tag and caption.

Headshots are also licensed for usage in the following Film & Theatre trade publications: Backstage, Deadline.com, The Hollywood Reporter, The Industry, Screen Daily, The Stage, Variety Magazine, and The Wrap, on condition I am clearly credited wherever they appear. Copyright clearance and/or licensing fees for any other use (such as news publication, magazine editorials, merchandise, Vinyl & CD art, or production bill-boards) must be negotiated and approved prior to publication. All supplied images remain the property and copyright of ‘Karen Fleming’ and are protected under United Kingdom & International copyright laws.

Please contact me for a custom quote If you would like to license images for press or any other usage beyond the standard headshot terms outlined.

If you have a publicist who may be planning to use the images for a campaign please also ensure they are aware of the copyright terms. Please do contact me with any questions.

Photoshoot FAQs

Where are you based? How do you shoot?

We are based in Camberwell, London SE5, close to Peckham Rye and around the corner from the very delicious Toad Bakery. We are close to both Vestry Road and Peckham Road / Southampton Way bus stops (for bus no.’s 12, 36, 136, 171, 343, 345, and 436). You will receive a full address and directions after you confirm your booking.

I generally shoot headshots in natural light, at my home studio and outdoors in London taking into account your preferences and the weather / light. I add in continuous lighting as necessary or desirable. I do travel for work. Please contact me directly for any work outside of London or overseas.

How should I prepare for my photoshoot?

Drink plenty of water in the week prior to your shoot and get as much sleep as you can. Exfoliate your skin well and moisturise as much as possible. Wear SPF (always!). Bring lip balm with you!

Enjoy some exercise in the days prior to your photoshoot - exercise is great for brightening your skin, and good for mental health. Go for walk and do some stretches. Dance around your home a bit. That’s perfect.

Please don’t diet or fast prior to shooting your headshots. Dieting can help you look tired and feel tired. How you feel will show in your headshots. Rather, focus on preparing your own meals (less sugar / very little salt) and include vegetables and fruit.

Don’t be hung over or sunburnt. Please don’t use fake tan or colour your hair right before your shoot. Your hair should be clean and natural-looking. If you want a new haircut or colour, It’s better to have your hair styled at least a week prior to your shoot - let your new look settle. Please let me know as soon as possible if you have a vacation sunburn / hairdo disaster. We can make a plan or find a new time to work together.

Please also let me know right away if you feel like you are getting sick, if you are suddenly ill or if you’re just having a dreadful week. I want your headshot session to be a relaxing and enjoyable experience. How you feel will show in your headshots. I would rather we have a brief conversation and decide the best path forward, than go ahead with a shoot when you’re truly struggling for whatever reason. We can reschedule your session if we need to.

What should I bring with me?

Bring plenty of options. Bring at least a few outfits and a number of different coloured tops. Bring your favourite clothing and think about what colours and tops might bring out your eyes. Choose some differing necklines. Solid colours and a v-neckline are often flattering.

Bring layers. Bring your favourite jacket to wear over a shirt or two. Try your favourite jumper. Think about what you need, if anything, under your top or shirt (vest / bra etc).

If you can, commit to an entire look, I’m happy to shoot a few wider portraits if we have time. If you love stripes, black or a particular dress or scarf, then bring it along!

At my studio I have a steamer (for clothing wrinkles) and hangers.

Can I bring my glasses? … and jewellery options?

Yes, please do. You might love an image with your favourite earrings.

I will want to shoot some portraits without your glasses and with minimal or no accessories. I want you to have all of the options you need for your agent and casting.

Please note that glasses must have anti-reflective coating. Your eyes will be very difficult to photograph behind your glasses if they don’t have this coating.

What about makeup?

A great tinted moisturiser is useful, as well as mascara and lip balm. Any moisturiser should match your skin tone exactly. If anything, err on the side of less makeup

Can I charge my phone?

Yep. Bring your cables and charge away

Can I straighten or curl my hair?

Yes. At my studio I have a hair-dryer and power sockets. You can bring your hair wand or straightener etc

Can I shave mid-photoshoot?

Yes. I have a bathroom with a sink in my studio space

Can we shoot outside?

Yes. I love to shoot outdoors. There are some situations where shooting outdoors is difficult (windy conditions and locations in particular can be tricky). If you would like to shoot entirely outside please discuss this with me when you are booking a photoshoot, we will work together to find the best time / date / weather possible

Note, if you are running very late or pressed for time on the date of your photoshoot, it might not be possible to shoot outdoors as well as in my studio

Can I bring my dog?

No. I love dogs but my cats will completely freak out if you bring your dog

Can I bring my mother?

Yes. This is not necessary though if you are over 18

I do think it’s best for you to attend your photoshoot on your own, as all the attention can be squarely on you. However, my total aim is for you to have a wonderful time shooting and for you to feel safe and supported. If you would like a family member or best friend to attend your photoshoot, then they are very welcome! They should arrive with you in this instance

Can we take full body shots or editorial shots in a headshot session?

I might shoot a little wider sometimes, but if you specifically need full body shots, 3/4 shots or editorial style images these should be requested at point of booking as these are beyond the reasonable scope of a headshot image (normally head to mid-chest portrait primarily for casting or marketing use) and would be charged as a ARTIST PORTFOLIO / CREATIVE PROJECT (typically a longer shoot)
